Gladiator is a movie loved by audience and critiques alike. The movie was nominated for 11 Oscars and won five including best picture and Best Actor for Russell Crowe.
Deadline has confirmed exclusively that the sequel is in works. Backed by Paramount studios and Ridley Scott. The script to be penned by Peter Craig, his writing credits include The Town and two of the Hunger Games.
The plot will be focused on Lucius, who is the son of Lucilla. A character played by Connie Nielsen in the original movie. The main character of the sequel was also the nephew of Commodus, played by Joaquin Phoenix.
Deadline did not reveal that who will play the character of Lucius. The IMDb page of Gladiator 2 is also empty at the moment and was updated on November 1, 2018.
So will Russell Crowe be back in the sequel or not, is a talk of mystery. There are not many chances of this happening because his character Maximus was killed by Commodus in the original 2000 movie.
The Gladiator made $460m in box office worldwide. The film was made by DreamWorks and distributed by Universal.
The sequel will be developed by Paramount studio and Universal got the option to co-finance the project. However, DreamWorks will not be having any role in this project.
Apart from this, Connie Nielsen will be seen in two movies releasing this year, Music, War and Love that is in post-production period and Tonight at Noon is completed.
Russell Crowe on the other end is playing a character named Marshall Eamons in upcoming biographical drama Boy Erased.
