Disney is officially pulling the plug because they want to proceed with their own streaming network Disney+. So there will be no Marvel movies on Netflix from now on.
The first film affected by this new move will be Captain Marvel. There was a time when you could watch Iron Man to Captain America: Civil War, Thor to Avengers: Infinity War on Netflix, but that won’t be happening anymore.
This new move will also affect shows like Jessica Jones and The Punisher.
Disney’s CEO Bob Iger talked with Deadline during an investor’s conference. He confirmed that Captain Marvel, the female-first standalone won’t be coming on Netflix.
He said the following.
What we’re basically trying to do here is invest in our future. The moves the company has made are all designed so that long-term this business will become an important part of Disney’s bottom line. It’s almost the equivalent of deploying capital to build out our theme parks. This is a bet on the future of this business.
Now, cutting ties with Netflix will cost Disney around $150 million. But this is a small price worth paying if we look at the bigger picture.
Disney is working hard for its streaming platform Disney+. They are planning to make several spin-offs of heroes and villains from Marvel movies and universe. We know there are confirmed plans for shows is Loki TV series, Falcon/Bucky Barnes and Scarlet Witch/Vision.
Disney doesn’t want their content on any other streaming service. So they have already axed shows like Daredevil, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage.
Captain Marvel is hitting theatres on March 8 and Disney+ is starting from this September. This movie will be one of the first to feature on the universe.
